Blogmas 2019 Day Five - 'Last Christmas': Film Review

For me, all Christmas films should do one or more of the following: make you cry, make you laugh, make you feel cheesy and festive and make your heart burst. 2019’s new Christmas film – ‘Last Christmas’ – certainly does all of those things which is why, even though I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, it definitely makes for a good festive watch, in my opinion.

Starring Emilia Clarke, Emma Thompson, Henry Golding and more, this festive flick centres around Wham! songs, giving a whole new meaning to the classic song ‘Last Christmas’. The story follows Kate, a young woman living in London and working in an all year-round Christmas shop. Bad luck seems to follow her, and nothing seems to be going right in her life. It’s safe to say she feels lost and alone and not knowing where she wants to go in life. Things take a turn when she meets Tom – whose positive, love for life attitude completely contradicts Kate’s. Finally, she feels like she’s found someone who she connects with and someone that actually listens to and understands her. However, things aren’t that straightforward for Kate and Tom and Kate’s eyes are opened to many things around her and in her life.

Although there is a romantic element to this storyline, for me this was not the main take away from the movie. The most important journey on this film was Kate’s journey. It’s something we all struggle with and I know it’s something that I’m dealing with too. The feeling of not knowing who you are, where you belong and what your purpose in life is. We go on this journey with Kate as she faces a lot of hard times, indulges in things to make her feel better and eventually, realises what’s right in front of her and the things that matter the most to her in life.

The music of George Michael and Wham! make the perfect accompaniment to this festive film that will have you laughing one moment and then crying the next. It was also made more magical given that it was set in London and took place in lots of locations that I was quite familiar with and some hidden gems that are yet to be explored. London at Christmas truly is magical, and this film emphasised that.

Whilst ‘Last Christmas’ may not be my new absolute favourite Christmas film, I still really enjoyed watching it and it captured the message of Christmas: that “helping each other makes us happy”. The heart and soul of Christmas, for me anyway, is about spreading joy and helping other people in any way you can. Tom’s character represented that, and Kate went on the journey to realise that she wanted to embody the heart of Tom and everything he stood for. She realised she had that in her and that’s why I think ‘Last Christmas’ made for a Christmas movie worthy of your time.

Have you seen it? Let me know your thoughts and whether or not you enjoyed it! Let’s discuss that plot twist…
