Why We Need An Indian Disney Princess

Image
Growing up as a Disney fan and especially loving the Princesses, the closest thing I had to feeling represented was Jasmine. Unlike the other Princesses, she looked like me because we had the same hair, eyes, and skin colour. However, I am of Indian descent, and Jasmine is from the made-up place of Agrabah - so as much as I love Jasmine and all that she stands for and represents, I still don’t feel like this is enough representation. So, here’s why I think we need an Indian Disney princess. Representation If you’re reading this and thinking ‘another post where she talks about representation’ then you’re probably in the wrong place, because representation is something that is really important to me and I will talk about it as much as I can. Disney is something that is loved globally and by a diverse group of people, so it is only fair to say that we’d want representation for everyone. No matter the age group – as we all know that Disney is timeless – it would mean so much to Ind

Why You Need 'Grounded' By Rob Fowler and Sharon Sexton In Your Life

Whilst this global pandemic isn’t to be taken lightly – one shining example of how humanity comes together in times of crisis is through the power of community. The theatre community is one of the those I’m so thankful to be a part of – especially now. So many different people are keeping the spirits up in this big, crazy family through different livestreams, quizzes and various other content. Rob Fowler and Sharon Sexton are two names you’re probably very familiar with. Either because you’re in the theatre community or because you’re a frequent reader of my blog/follow me on social media. Covid-19 has put a hold on live theatre which included the Mamma Mia tour where Fowler and Sexton were appearing respectively as Sam and Donna – blowing away audiences daily with their talent. Obviously because of circumstances, the pair have been quarantined – like many of us – for the past few weeks. Thus, ‘Grounded’ was born. ‘Grounded’ is an hour length concert filmed in the cottage tha

LGBTQ+ People Are More Than Just Your Background Characters

Pixar’s latest hit film is ‘Onward’ and because of circumstances, I haven’t got to see it yet but I’m hoping it makes its way Disney+ in the UK soon because I’m desperate to see it. It was announced that ‘Onward’ was to feature Pixar’s ‘first openly gay character’ and when this announcement broke – I felt excited because I know what representation means to not just me, but to a lot of people. The character is Officer Specter, voiced by Lena Waithe. By the sounds of it, Waithe’s character makes a fleeting appearance in the film and mentions in passing that she has a girlfriend. I love that a character can be placed in a film and can talk about their girlfriend like a heterosexual couple would be able to – thus showing kids how normal LGBTQ+ relationships are. However, the fact that the first and only openly LGBTQ+ character in a Pixar film is a minor character is still not enough. Having an LGBTQ+ character in your movie is not something that should be done for ‘woke points’ or to

Is Disney+ Worth The Subscription?

Disney+ has been out over a week now and it’s been a saviour for a lot of people, given the circumstances. The streaming service is packed full of content for everyone to enjoy, but the question on the minds of those on the fence – is it worth the money? *as a side note, I know a lot of people are struggling with finances at the moment and this post isn’t meant to come across as insensitive – more of a review on Disney+ and whether people who are considering subscribing to the streaming service should do it or not. In short, I do think that Disney+ is worth the investment. If your finances allow it, it’s especially worth subscribing to during this time as it certainly gives you a way of whiling away the hours whilst we’re safe at home. But why is Disney+ worth it, I hear you ask? Why should I spend that money on another streaming service? It’s completely valid to have questions and want to know more before you drop a lot of money on a Disney themed Netflix so I thought I’d sh
