Paris/DLP October 2019 - Trip Report: Day One

Can you think of anything more iconic than travelling to Paris to see Mamma Mia on stage? Okay, probably watching it in Greece but this was definitely up there in iconic moments in my life that I’ll remember forever.

If you know me, you’ll know how much I love going to the theatre and also how much I love visiting Disneyland Paris during Halloween season, so the fact that one of my favourite musicals starring two of my favourite people was playing in Paris during October seemed too perfect.
So, thanks to cheap Eurostar tickets and our annual passes, Jade and I – along with our friend, Molly – managed to book a three-day trip to Paris and Disney, with a Saturday night visit to La Seine Musicale to see Mamma Mia.

We travelled from London St Pancras on Saturday (13th October) morning and by midday we were at Paris Gare Du Nord station. We decided that we’d dedicate this day to exploring Paris and seeing as many things as we could before we had to head to the theatre. So, even though we were conscious of time – I still don’t feel we were that stressed out. With our suitcases in tow, we got an Uber to the Moulin Rouge. This has been something I’ve wanted to visit for years. I fell in love with the movie years ago and ever since then, I knew I had to go and see the iconic venue in person. It was a dream come true seeing it up close and even though Ewan McGregor didn’t come to sweep me off my feet – it was still amazing to visit.
After this, we lugged ourselves and our cases to Montmartre and despite the strenuous walk – it was worth it when we got to the top of the hill and saw the gorgeous views of Paris. This took us to around two o’clock so we decided to begin the journey to Val D’Europe where our hotel was so we could drop our suitcases off and freshen up. It took us just under an hour to get to our hotel and after a quick check in and unloading our bags into our room – we were off again. It took us about 45 minutes to get to Trocadéro where it was just a short walk to the Eiffel Tower. We’d all visited before, but it had been a while for all of us, so it was nice to see it again and get a few photos especially as the sun decided to come out then. A short walk along the Seine and an uber journey later, we made it to the Louvre Museum. Sadly, we didn’t have much time left so we couldn’t go inside but it was stunning to see it in person; especially as it was just before the sun was setting and the sky was perfect. We used this as the perfect time to sit down and just take in the views and count our lucky stars for being in a beautiful city, surrounded by stunning architecture.

After this, it was time for us to make the half an hour journey to Pont De Sèvres station and then walk across to the venue. La Seine Musicale is located on an island on the Seine river and it is undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful venues I’ve had the privilege of visiting. It was definitely more like a large-scale music venue than a theatre.

Before the show started at 8pm, we had a chance to grab some dinner and buy some merchandise and then took our seats. Considering it was a huge venue, we were quite far back but despite this – we still had the best time ever. Obviously, we were already familiar with Mamma Mia and seeing the touring cast perform it in Paris – with two of our favourite performers (Sharon Sexton and Rob Fowler) in the roles of Donna and Sam – was an incredible experience. The cast was full of incredibly talented people and I’m so glad we made the trip over to see them.

After the show and much to our amazement, Rob and Sharon invited us on stage for a quick hello and on stage photo. Words cannot express how grateful we were for this opportunity and how much it meant to us. They’re most likely not reading this, but I don’t think we can thank them enough for the perfect end to an amazing day and for giving us memories that we’ll definitely treasure forever.

After this, we managed to catch the train back to Val D’Europe and get ready for and sleep before the two Disney days that lay ahead of us.
