Bollywood Movie Recommendations

Bollywood movies are a big part of my culture and were also a huge part of my childhood. From the music to the outfits to the familiarity of them and the, sometimes, overdramatics of them – they mean a lot to me. There’s so much to love about them and because of the sheer volume of them; it can be overwhelming not knowing where to start. So, for a new blog post that may turn into a series – I decided to share some movie recommendations with you all. Side note: these films can be really long in running time so if long films aren’t for you then that’s totally okay! However, if you want to give them a try, then try pausing the film for an interval (however long you want that interval to be). Most of the films will have a really obvious place that will be good for an interval too. So, the way I thought I’d set out this post is by sharing genre/tropes that you may like and then what film(s) you should watch based on that!

If you like Forbidden Love and Star-Crossed Lovers then you should watch Veer Zaara

Veer is an Indian air force pilot. Zaara is a woman from Pakistan that he rescues after a bus accident. Fate brings these two together but with every single odd stacked against them, we are taken on an emotional rollercoaster as we witness their stories unfold. From India to a prison cell in Pakistan; is the endurance and power of love enough? Or are there more powerful forces at work to make sure neither of these two get their happily ever after? Considered one of the greatest Bollywood romantic movies, this stunning movie boasts an incredible soundtrack, a captivating and heart-wrenching story and truly showcases the beauty of Bollywood movies.

If you like Friends to Lovers and Love Triangles then you should watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

The classic story of one best friend being in love with the other best friend whilst the latter is completely oblivious and develops feelings for someone else. Years later, fate (aka a well-intentioned and meddling child) brings the two best friends together again. But what exactly is their destiny? Are their feelings romantic or platonic after all this time? From its iconic soundtrack (particularly the titular track) to its star-studded cast and 90s fun; this is a hugely popular Bollywood movie and I’ve watched it countless times.

If you like Dysfunctional Families and Love Triangles and A Guaranteed Cry then you should watch Kal Ho Naa Ho

Kaal Ho Naa Ho translates to Tomorrow May Never Come. With her family struggling financially and emotionally, Nainais at her wits end. She has the support of her best friend, Rohit but life is still completely overwhelming. Enter Aman. Aman comes into Naina’s family’s lives when they need a light of hope the most. But Aman has his own secret and now he’s intertwined into all of their lives and things don’t stay secret forever. Filled with love triangles, catchy and heart achingly good songs and important messages throughout; Kal Ho NaaHo still remains incredibly popular in Bollywood.
