Blogmas Day Five - ‘A Christmas Carol’ at The Old Vic: Review

What better way to celebrate the Christmas season then by seeing a production of ‘A Christmas Carol’?

This Monday, my girlfriend and I visited the beautiful Old Vic theatre to see Jack Thorne’s adaptation of this timeless classic.

The theatre had transported us back in time with ushers dressed in time appropriate clothing and handing out complimentary mince pies (surely you’re sold just after this?!) and satsumas. As well as this, the theatre had changed from its normal layout to cater for a 360° view of the stage. All of this already had me excited for what was to come and further emphasised the festive spirit they were presenting.

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge has obviously been retold a number of times and with good reason; its story of morality and the importance of kindness and love, particularly around Christmas time, is always relevant. Thorne’s adaptation of Dickens’ classic certainly did not disappoint in bringing to life one of the most important Christmas time stories.

Everything from the staging to the lighting to audience involvement was throughly thought out and executed beautifully; so much so that it really did feel as though the story was being unfolded in front of your eyes and you felt as though you were on this morality journey with Scrooge himself as you witnessed his encounters with the different Christmas Ghosts and with ghosts of his past.

Obviously, one important factor of any production is the casting and their ability to bring these well known and much loved characters to life and the cast of this production certainly did just that. With Stephen Tompkinson portraying the role of Scrooge and a mix of talent helping to tell this tale - you are guaranteed two hours of complete Christmas magic and being reminded of the importance of Christmas time. The portrayal of Tiny Tim is shared between five young actors; all of whom are guaranteed to bring a tear to your eyes as you watch their heartwarming portrayal of the much loved character of Tiny Tim.

So, this production brings you a talented cast, incredible staging, audience involvement and free mince pies. What more could you want? That’s what brings me into the effects. Without giving too much away, the effects used in this production are the perfect dose of Christmas magic you need in your life this season. The use of bells simply add another dose into this magical telling of a timeless classic that you need to make sure you see.

If you happen to be in or around London between now and the 19th January then you definitely need to get yourself to the Old Vic Theatre for this magical production, so you can be whisked away on the story of which you’re so familiar with but has an everlasting important message.
