Blogmas Day Fourteen - Five Christmas Covers For Your Playlist
Christmas music is one of the most enjoyable things about
the festive season; merry songs are playing everywhere you go and your
Christmas loving heart is bursting…or maybe that’s just me. Anyway, for today’s
Blogmas I thought I would do something differently. Instead of telling you what
original songs should be on your Christmas playlist, I thought I would
recommend some covers of your favourite Christmas songs by my favourite
artists/people that I’m a fan of.
Hark! The Herald
Angels Sing – Busted
To kick off the list, I figured what better way to start
than with my favourite band. We all know and love ‘Hark!’ and for some of us,
it’ll even bring back fond memories of Christmas assemblies and singing it in
school. In 2003, Busted dropped their cover and this version is obviously quite
different to the one you’d sing in school, but it wouldn’t be Busted if it
didn’t have their own pop-rock kick to it. This gem definitely needs to be on
your playlist because it’s the perfect song to rock out to whilst decorating or
to blast out in your earphones as you try to tackle busy high streets for
Christmas shopping.
Santa Claus Is Coming
To Town – Charlie Simpson
It’s not Christmas without ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’
being on your playlist and that’s when my favourite artist comes into the mix
with his festive cover. Using footage from Charlie’s recording breaking
‘Coldest Gig Ever’, the warm and melodic cover is something we all need in our
lives especially at Christmas time. I dare you to not get in the festive spirit
whilst listening to this cover because I’m telling you, it’s not possible.
Baby It’s Cold
Outside – Rob Fowler and Sharon Sexton
This powerhouse duo are currently taking the West End by
storm as Falco and Sloane in the hit musical, ‘Bat Out of Hell’. They have
recently released an album, ‘Vision of You’, based on the story of Falco and
Sloane’s relationship and one of the songs included on this track listing is
another popular Christmas song – ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. I know this song has
been covered plenty of times but when you put two strong voices together like
Fowler and Sexton’s, you’re bound to get a Christmas delight for your ears and
their cover of this somewhat controversial song definitely delivers.
Little Drummer Boy –
Jason Manns and Rob Benedict
CW’s hit show, ‘Supernatural’ brought many talented people
into my life and that includes the vocal talents of Jason Manns and Rob
Benedict. In 2014, Jason released an album full of Christmas songs with various
different ‘Supernatural’ cast members, (Thanks Jason for an amazing present
that year) and on that is one of my favourite covers – ‘Little Drummer Boy’ by
Manns and Benedict. The pair both have gentle and harmonious tones that
compliment each other perfectly and make for the perfect cover of ‘Little
Drummer Boy’ giving you the perfect song to listen to whilst wrapping presents.
Happy Xmas (War Is
Over) – Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson and Sean Ono Lennon
This classic song, like the others on the list, obviously
has a lot of covers of it out there but this newly released version by Miley
Cyrus and co had to make the list because of the magic and passion you can hear
from Cyrus’ voice. Whilst it might not be as upbeat as some of the others on
the list, it’s still a special cover delivered by Miley Cyrus. Her voice is so
unique and personally I don’t think there’s anyone vocally quite like her which
makes this cover even more special.
Do you think any of these covers will be making your
playlist? What are some Christmas covers on your playlist?
